Self-Employment Benefit
Income Support for New Business Owners
The Metis Business Centre, in partnership with the Labrador Metis Nation offers a Self-Employment Benefit (SEB) program to members who are unemployed or underemployed (working less than 20 hours per week) and starting a new business. This program is designed as an income support measure for entrepreneurs who are working full-time towards starting a business, or has started a business no longer than six months before the time of application for this program. The Self Employment Benefit (SEB) allows participants to concentrate on making their new business succeed.
Eligibility
The benefit shall be applied for no later than 6 months after the start of the business.
Applicants must be members of the Labrador Metis Nation, working full-time toward the business, and must provide a professional business plan. Clients are also expected to provide activity reports and financial statements at year end of the business.
How to Apply
To apply for the Self Employment Benefit (SEB) Program, you are required to meet with the Centre's Business Development Officer to discuss your business idea as well as to fill out a SEB Application. A copy of the application can be downloaded by clicking the link below. Please fill out and print this application and bring it with you to your initial meeting with the Business Development Officer. If you are located outside of the Goose Bay area, the application may be faxed to our office at (709) 896-5739 and the Business Development Officer will follow-up with you within two business days to discuss your application.

Application Process
Once your application is reviewed and all supporting documents are received at our office, the Business Development Officer will complete a Client Profile to be sent to the the Labrador Metis Nation's Human Resource Development Committee for review. This committe will review your file and make a decision on your application. Once a decision has been made, you will be notified by mail and a follow-up telephone call from our office.
If a client wishes to appeal they must do so within two (2) weeks of receiving a rejection letter. The rejection letter must be sent by registered mail for tracking purposes.
What to Expect
A Self Employed Benefit shall not exceed 52 weeks and the benefit shall not exceed a maximum amount of $10,000.
